French firm DBV Technologies, (http://www.dbv-technologies.com/en/) won’t be the first medical research company to take on food allergies, but it could well be one of the most successful. Allergies are a massive healthcare issue, affecting hundreds of millions of people all over the globe.
As a result, considerable investment has gone into finding reliable, safe, effective ways of diagnosing and treating allergies from peanut, cow’s milk protein and hen’s egg to pollen, house dust mite and fish.
What this Paris-based firm has done is to take a simple approach and ally it with revolutionary technologies. This has resulted in the Viaskin patch – click here for more details.
As you can see in the diagram below, the patch is composed of just a few different components. Key to its success, however, is the use of an electrospray to spray an even layer of antigens onto the back of the titanium backing. This approach ensures the antigens lose none of their chemical properties prior to being transferred to the body via the skin – a crucial factor in the effectiveness of this treatment.
